GETTING STARTED WITH GENEALOGY

The program is for genealogy novices as well as for those returning to America's #2 hobby. You'll get a tour and some lessons on the Genealogy resources of the Farmington Library website, like Ancestry Library (the library version of ancestry.com) and ProQuest newspapers (which includes The Hartford Courant). There will also be an introduction to the 1940 U.S. Census, the "nosiest census ever." The information from that census is a valuable jumping off point in a journey that can lead to birth, marriage and death dates; immigration records; naturalization and military records, city directories and newspapers. Every document found and studied is another step in the adventure of discovering your family history and understanding the people whose DNA you share.

***Please note that this is a 90 minute presentation***

***Please see attachments with helpful links and family group and pedigree charts under "Attachments" on this event listing***

SPEAKER BIO

Television researcher Janeen Bjork applied the detective, analytic, and presentation skills she garnered in a 30-year career to her family tree, and then to the trees of her friends, students, and clients. In recent years she has taught Genealogy at community colleges, Adult Ed. programs, libraries, museums, churches, and even for a Mensa meeting. Her enthusiasm for Genealogy is infectious, and she will give you tools and strategies for finding and preserving your family legacies for posterity.
