Program Description

Event Details

Join us to honor the 75th anniversary of the invasion of Normandy with a two-part lecture.

The Normandy Invasion (also called Operation Overlord or D-Day), the Allied invasion of western Europe during World War II, was launched on June 6, 1944, with the simultaneous landing of U.S., British, and Canadian forces on five separate beachheads in Normandy, France. By the end of August 1944 all of northern France was liberated, and the invading forces reorganized for the drive into Germany, where they would eventually meet with Soviet forces advancing from the east to bring an end to the Nazi Reich.

Part 1: Prelude to D-Day
WED May 15, 7:00 PM
Learn about the fall of Western Europe to the Nazis and the construction of their defenses and the Atlantic Wall in their bid to keep it.

Part 2: N-O-R-M-A-N-D-Y
WED May 22, 7:00 PM
This will detail the "Perfect Storm" of events that descended upon the Nazi's "Fortress Europe" and resulted in the Allied victory with the collapse and German surrender eleven months later.

Mr. Cole has educated a variety of audiences ranging from senior citizen groups to high school students, historical societies and public library forums across Connecticut.  He has been an invited speaker in France, the Czech Republic, and Africa (Tunisia).
