The Coffee House Portraits explore the inner life of strangers sitting in a coffeehouse, at a moment in time. The portraits are an expressive exploration of the faces and beings of these strangers. In such momentary explorations, the artist can’t but reveal his own inner being as well. The portraits begin with a quick and spontaneous drawing using ink, pencil, coffee, and/or oil pastels: the visual expression of an urge to capture an interesting element, energy, tension or emotion of the subject. The sense of the immediacy of the moment drives the mark-making, although some portraits are furtherworked on in the studio to render larger on paper, canvas, wood pieces or panels. Other portraits are left as they are in the moment.
Meet the artist Garrett Phelan on Saturday, March 15 between 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM in the Hoppin Gallery at the Barney Library, 71 Main Street during Poetry Reading with Debbie Gilbert & Garrett Phelan.
Exhibits are open to the public during open hours at the Main and Barney Libraries. However, since the gallery spaces are used for other programs and events, the exhibits may not always be accessible. Anyone wishing to view the exhibits are asked to check with the Libraries by phone at 860-673-6791 to confirm availability and accessibility of the rooms.
