During the month of November, storytelling organization Speak Up will partner with the Farmington Libraries to hold a storytelling show and workshop. The storytelling show will take place on Friday, November 20, at 8:00 PM. On Saturday, November 21, Speak Up founder Matthew Dicks will hold an all-day storytelling workshop. Both events will be held at the Farmington Main Library, located at 6 Monteith Drive.
Speak Up – Hartford’s most popular storytelling show – comes to the Farmington Library for an evening of hilarious and heartfelt storytelling that you are sure to love. 18-time Moth StorySLAM champion and three-time GrandSLAM champion Matthew Dicks and his wife, Elysha Dicks, bring a cast of amazing storytellers to the library to tell true stories from their lives on the theme “Elephant in the Room: Stories about Animals.” Tickets are $15 each. Doors open at 7:00 PM. Wine will be served. Reserve your seats at fplspeakup2015.eventbrite.com.
The following day, Speak Up co-founder Matthew Dicks will teach a day-long workshop on the art of storytelling. This is a workshop designed for people with little or not any previous storytelling experience and seeks to meet the goals of a wide range of participants. While many of Matthew’s workshop graduates have gone on to tell stories on stage for Speak Up, The Moth, and many other storytelling organizations, most students take this beginner-level workshop with no desire to ever take the stage. People want to learn about storytelling for personal and professional development, to meet new people, to improve communication skills, to develop their writing ability, to improve their dating prospects, to challenge themselves, to finally get the attention of grandchildren and colleagues, and to try something new. The workshop will run from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM, with an hour lunch break. Registration is $90 per person. Register at fplspeakupworkshop2015.eventbrite.com.
These events are open to the public. Advanced registration is required for both programs, and payment must be received in advance or at the door to enter. Space is limited. Please call 860-673-6791 for details or register through the library’s web site at www.farmingtonlibraries.org.
