On Tuesday, May 14th, the Barney Library received a visit from the wife of the 16th President of the United States. Barney’s Hoppin Gallery had a full house, as actress Carol Deleppo sank seamlessly into the character of Mary Todd Lincoln: accent, hoop skirts, and all. Over the course of the hour long program, Ms. Deleppo took the audience on a journey through Mary’s troubled, and often misunderstood life. Many were surprised to learn that Mary was an avid and bright student, and that she and Abraham Lincoln almost eloped. At the end of the program, Ms. Deleppo answered audience questions, and gave recommendations for further research and reading into the life of Mary Todd Lincoln.
